Week 1:  Ring the Bell Challenge

Students were challenged to work as a team to design Rube Goldberg style machines with a series of interactions that would ring a bell.  Each day the challenge was increased by added requirements, increasing the number of interactions in their design.

Students then discussed and developed norms for successful team work.

  • Step-up or step back

  • listen to group member's ideas and try them

  • Be kind and respectful to group members

  • Spend some time planning

Impractically Practical Perpetual Presentation Delivery Device Project

In this cross curricular project students will be looking at the essential question, “How have major discoveries and inventions in science and mathematics shaped our modern world?”  Inspired by Rube Goldberg, we will be using modern technology, to design and fabricate a complex interconnected machine installation, which presents these major historical events in unique ways.

Week 2:  Simple Machines

Students researched and reviewed the 6 simple machines:

  • lever

  • pulley

  • wheel and axle

  • inclined plane

  • screw

  • wedge

Students will be applying their understanding of how simple machines work to design their delivery devices.

Week 3: Mechanism Study

Studnets begin exploring the vast world of complex mechanisms, from the  that produce unique types of motion:

  • linear

  • intermittent

  • oscillation

  • rotary

  • reciprocating

  • irregular

With a partner, students will research, design and make a specific type of mechanism and present their work to their group members and classmates.
